How to improve bath safety at home

Posted 18 June 2015 by Team Hudson

According to Consumer Reports, each year about half of those in the U.S. who are 65 or older suffer a fall–about 10 percent of those falls result in serious injuries.

The good news is that falls at home can easily be prevented by upgrading fixtures and installing strategically placed safety rails and grab bars, especially near bathing areas.

TIP: Towel bars should not be considered grab bars because they are not designed to be weight-bearing. Install grab bars in showers, tubs and next to toilets so senior citizens are not tempted to reach for towel bars, sliding glass doors, or other unstable fixtures.

When it comes to bathroom safety, proper product choice and installation is key—grab bars are actually rated to support certain weights. A professional remodeler can help ensure the right product is placed in the right spot…and that it is safely secured to any surface.

With the proper hardware, Hudson Remodeling can affordably install safety rails in existing shower units (including those made of tile or fiberglass).

Here are two additional bath safety tips for senior citizens:

  • Consider replacing an existing tub/shower unit with a barrier free shower unit. These units can include a built-in shower seat and a handheld showerhead set on a sliding bar with a 6-foot hose that can be used while standing or sitting.
  • Install a comfort height toilet, which is about 2 inches taller than a standard model and is easier to get off of—install safety bars alongside toilets.
