Bathroom remodeling, walk-in shower

AFTER: Best Bath walk-in shower installed.

Are your parents safe and comfortable in their home? Are you nervous about tripping hazards that may be present? Did you know that more than half of all falls occur in the home, according to the National Institutes of Health?

With their many slippery surfaces, bathrooms present some of the biggest barriers for worry-free living among older adults, but fortunately there are great solutions.

A Whatcom County homeowner came to Hudson Remodeling recently for help in preventing slips and falls while also increasing comfort in the bathroom.

Our residential remodeling team installed a Best Bath shower unit for them. This seemed like a great opportunity to talk about the benefits of installing a walk-in shower system instead of a traditional bath tub:

  1. Barrier-free access: With this kind of a setup, you just walk right into the shower instead of stepping over a high ledge into the tub. You can see from the pictures how easy access now is, especially when all of the surfaces are wet and slippery. Even younger and more agile people can appreciate that difference!
  2. Integrated safety bar: A strong, sturdy safety bar now runs the length of the shower, providing a safe handhold to aid in standing or to ease the transition from standing to sitting and back. Don’t rely on a flimsy towel bar outside the shower; it will not hold up when you actually need it.
  3. Integrated seat: When legs get tired or weak, it’s critical to have nearby access to a seat to help prevent falls. This integrated shower seat enables people of all ages to sit and shower with ease.
  4. Remodeling a bathroom, Bellingham WA

BEFORE: Dated tub/shower unit that was hard to access.

Hand-held shower head: Standing or sitting, it’s easy to access the water.

  5. Easy to clean: Old high-sided bathtubs are difficult to keep clean. On hands and knees, it’s hard to reach over the edge to get all the nooks and crannies of the tub. Walk-in showers are much easier to access and clean.

The best gift you can give your parents is to be proactive and help them make changes before they fall or get injured. Our experienced carpenters do a lot of remodeling work for people who want the ability to remain active and safe in their own homes.
