Before you start, here’s what you need to know about kitchen remodeling

Posted 26 July 2017 by Team Hudson

 It’s time.

You’ve decided that the almond-colored range and faux-wood paneling in your kitchen have got to go.

But before you start swinging a hammer, here are a few considerations to make your kitchen planning smoother and easier.

Will I add a pantry? And if so, where? Especially if you don’t have one currently, a pantry can make a big difference in the functionality of a kitchen. But you can’t add it just anywhere. Consider what you’ll be using it for. Daily staples like pasta, cereal and flour? Or deep storage like home-canned fruit and vegetables? Ideally, a daily-use pantry would lie along the edge of the fridge-stove-sink triangle.

Counter-depth fridge, or fridge-depth counters? Counter-depth fridges are all the rage, and for good reason. They can fit seamlessly into the flow of your cabinets, adding functionality without bulging out into your living space. But they can also be quite expensive. To replicate the look and feel at a fraction of the cost, consider making your counters an extra foot deep along the fridge wall. Not only will you gain the look of a counter-depth fridge, but you’ll also gain some bonus counter space, too.

How high should my countertops be? Standard kitchen counter height is 36 inches. For ideal comfort, the countertop should typically be 2 to 3 inches below elbow height. If you’re particularly short or tall, 36 inches might be all wrong. However, there are two additional points to consider: Most kitchen appliances, such as dishwashers and ranges, are designed for standard-height counters. Also, if you plan to sell your home someday, custom heights might dissuade prospective buyers. A compromise would be to raise or lower just sections of the countertop or to have a kitchen island at non-standard height.

Do I want a new kitchen island? Do I want to get rid of one? Large kitchens benefit from the extra workspace an island provides, but small kitchens can seem crowded. If you’re changing the size of your kitchen during the remodel, consider whether you want to add or remove an island. And if you want a workspace at non-standard height, as mentioned above, an island might be the perfect choice.

Do I want a new kitchen layout? Planning a new kitchen while the old one is still in place can be one of the hardest parts of the kitchen-remodeling process. But you don’t want to start gutting the room until you’re sure what appliances will go where, and which walls, if any, will be removed. Here’s where an experienced kitchen designer with computer design skills, like Susan Silva at Hudson Remodeling, can be invaluable. A three-dimensional CAD rendering of your kitchen can help you make difficult decisions without having to fully commit.

If you’re considering remodeling the kitchen in your Whatcom or Skagit County home, give the experts at Hudson Remodeling a call. They have years of design/build experience and have seen (and done) just about everything when it comes to kitchen remodels.

Kitchen remodeling trends for 2014 – Whatcom County Home & Garden Show

Posted 23 January 2014 by Team Hudson

Kitchen remodeling, Bellingham WABetween cooking meals, putting away groceries, doing dishes, and prepping for dinner parties and gatherings, people spend a lot of time in their kitchens. Yet we often hear them say they wish there was more cupboard space, more room for food prep or even a bit more space to maneuver around other people in the kitchen.

2014 is the year to stop fighting your kitchen, and instead create a functional space that helps you enjoy the time spent there.

Renovating kitchens can be exciting – there are so many options when it comes to improving the space and creating a beautiful room. Zillow.com has assembled examples of 2014 kitchen design and remodeling trends including open shelving, glossy black counter tops, frosted glass doors, and copper accents.

Successful kitchen remodels start with a vision – inspiration is then brought to life by choosing the right products and contractor to work with.  We invite you to take a look at this photo gallery to see samples of kitchens our team has worked on.

Because the kitchen is often the heart of the home, we recommend careful planning to minimize interference with daily routines.  Timing can be everything!  Tackling kitchen remodels in the warmer months allows homeowners to do some cooking outside during construction – meeting with a contractor now will get the ball rolling for a spring or summer remodel.

Home and Garden Show 2011 BoothWant to learn more about remodeling your Whatcom or Skagit County kitchen?  Stop by and visit Hudson Remodeling’s booth at Whatcom County’s 35th Annual Home & Garden Show at the Northwest Washington Fair Grounds on February 28-March 2.

Talk with Charlie about ideas for your dream kitchen and enter to win a 10” solar light tube (valued at $200). Light tubes have quickly becoming a popular way to bring more light into spaces that are too small for skylights.

We hope to see you there!

It’s Time for the 33rd Annual Whatcom County Home & Garden Show!

Posted 17 February 2012 by Team Hudson

Whatcom County Home & Garden Show:  March 2-4, 2012

Did you know that this event, with 200 vendors, is one of the largest home shows north of Seattle? If you are considering improvements to your home in 2012 this is a wonderful opportunity to meet local product and service providers who can help.

Hudson Remodeling will again have a booth at the show. Make sure to stop by to say ‘hello’, check out samples of our craftsman-quality work and the VersaGuard gutter system, and enter to win 8 FREE HOURS OF HANDYMAN TIME.

Here’s what last year’s winner did with their prize…they provided the materials and we spent the day building the custom garden arbor of their dreams.

So, what would you do with 8 hours of handyman time? Tackle the ‘honey-do’ list, drywall repair or painting projects, install a programmable thermostat, install a ceiling fan, install shelving in the garage or a pantry, or maybe even build raised garden beds. There are lots of possibilities.

The Whatcom County Home and Garden Show is held at The Northwest Washington Fair & Events Center located at 1775 Front Street – Lynden WA 98264. The event is brought to you by The Building Industry Association of Whatcom County.

I hope to see you there!
