Lake Whatcom - Kitchen

The challenge: This home on the south shore of Lake Whatcom was built in the late 1930's. The remodeled kitchen space had been formerly divided, down the middle of the current island, by a load bearing wall. This arrangement made both rooms long and narrow, one the kitchen and one the laundry room. The difficulty we overcame was supporting the second floor framing, which was running in two directions. By building beams on site with wood and steel we were able to support the second floor framing and have ceilings high enough to build coffered, wood trimmed ceilings.

By framing in the exposed interior porch , the laundry room-mud room is no longer in the kitchen. This room has heated tile floors and is greatly appreciated by the family dogs.

This project will be entered in the 2005 REX awards on the state and local level
