Trends for 2018: walk-in showers, solid wood doors and more

Posted 29 November 2017 by Team Hudson

One remodeling trend we’re seeing for 2018 is a focus on quality throughout the home. Especially for items that are used and seen every day, homeowners in communities around Bellingham, WA are showing a penchant for upgrading to higher-quality, longer-lasting elements throughout the house. They want features they can be proud of and that they’re confident will last for decades.

With that in mind, here are five home remodeling trends that people will be paying close attention to in 2018.

Walk-in showers: Be honest. When’s the last time you actually filled your 1990s soaker tub with hot water, climbed in and enjoyed a quiet moment in the bath? The idea sounds wonderful, but it can be hard to find the time for it. That’s why it’s become so popular to replace those tubs with a gorgeous walk-in shower. Showering is something you do every day, so why not enjoy it in a spacious, beautiful setting with premium shower head (or heads!).

Solid, wood-paneled doors: Homeowners whose houses are full of cheap, hollow-core or pressed hardboard doors are upgrading to solid, wood-paneled doors throughout. Doors are another item you use every day, and upgrading to higher quality, better looking doors can transform the feel of the home.

Enhanced window trim: Another common element of homes built in the recent past are windows wrapped in pressboard trim or, in many cases, no trim at all. Especially in the Pacific Northwest, where the Craftsman style is so prevalent, it has become trendy to finish this job, so to speak, by fully trimming out windows with either painted sills and wrap or with gorgeous, clear-coated real wood liners and sills. The end result is an upgraded, cohesive look throughout the whole house.

Accent wall: Painted accent walls were all the rage a decade or two ago, and homeowners today are adapting that trend by cladding accent walls with weathered wood or painted tongue-and-groove planks.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring: This trendy new choice for flooring truly can transform your home. You can get it in pretty much any pattern you can think of, and it does a great job mimicking everything from slate tile to weathered, reclaimed wood.

Those are just a few of the trends we’re seeing for 2018 remodeling. If you’re thinking of remodeling or upgrading your Whatcom County home, give Hudson a call. Our kitchen, bath and whole-house remodeling crew would be glad to assist.

Bathroom remodeling: Bold fixtures highlight design trends for 2017

Posted 23 November 2016 by Team Hudson

Form over function? Not in today’s bathrooms.

But don’t think that means bathrooms are boring. Emerging trends in bathroom remodeling are all about ramping up style without sacrificing usability. Modern, sleek fixtures and shiny surfaces are being used in creative ways to put personal stamps on bathrooms while also maximizing long-term functionality and resale.

The bathroom is one of the most-important and most-used rooms in your home. If you’re considering giving new life to your bathroom, Hudson Remodeling is here to help. For inspiration, check out these trends we expect to see in 2017 bathrooms.

Surfaces: Natural surfaces such as granite and marble have been mainstays in bathroom design since just about forever. Don’t overlook tile, though, which can be arranged into geometric patterns to express personality while also maintaining its broad appeal. Expect to see a lot of muted colors this year, such as grays and other earth tones, set off by areas of geometric interest. Colored or pattern-printed tile arranged into geometric shapes can add pop to floors, walls and countertops. Small areas of odd-shaped tile can also add interest.

Fixtures: In 2017, look for modern fixtures that add a touch of style without sacrificing functionality. Home remodelers are eschewing standard items like classic sink-vanity combo for bold and modern sinks, faucets and bathtubs. Freestanding sinks and bathtubs in bold shapes and even bold colors can act both as functional fixtures and art-like centerpieces.

Colors: As mentioned above, gray will continue to be a huge color in bathroom design. Add to the mix earth tones such as green, brown and blue for a sleek-yet-subdued combo that will provide a bathroom you can be proud of for years to come. To get some of that color, consider bringing in additional items such as wooden touches or living plants. Bamboo, for example, needs little light to grow and brings both color and form into the space. And for that space that needs a little extra flair, don’t be afraid to add in little bits of bright colors, too.
