Make your home cozy for winter

Posted 27 September 2017 by Team Hudson

Windy weather, swirling leaves and the pattering of rain on exterior windows — when fall arrives in Whatcom County, it brings with it a constant urge to curl up in front of the fire or soak in a warm bath.

If cooler weather and the approach of the holidays have you brainstorming ways to make your home cozier, peruse this list of home-remodeling projects; you may find on it the perfect little warm winter hideaway.

Create a home theater room: Do you have an unused room in your house? Unfinished basement? Consider remodeling that space to add a comfy space for watching movies and sports.

Upgrade the bathroom: One way to combat the colder weather of winter is with the warmth of a spa-like bathroom. Consider a non-jetted soaking tub so that there’s no noise to wreck the mood or maintenance to wreck your wallet.

Install a new fireplace: It can be hard to curl up in front of the fireplace when you don’t have one. Modern technology offers numerous options for fireplaces, from gas inserts to pellet stoves to electrical fireplaces that don’t even require external venting.

You pick the fireplace and Hudson Remodeling will design and install a fabulous mantle that will match your home’s character.

Create a reading nook: Whatcom County’s older homes are well-known for their myriad quirky spaces perfect for the creation of cozy reading nooks. With a little imagination, newer homes, too, offer many such spaces: an unused corner of the living room, next to the front-entrance pony wall, under the window of the master bedroom.

Build a window seat: Speaking of reading nooks — window seats can be fun, functional ways to transform the look and feel of a room. Simply take a plain window and flank it with built-in bookshelves or closets to create a cozy space you’ll never want to leave. Lounge there with a good book, hot cup of coffee and the view of your side yard or surrounding neighborhood, and you’ll never want to leave.

Upgrade your windows: While you’re at it, you might want to consider installing better windows.

Those old wooden or aluminum windows aren’t keeping the cold out as well as they should. New, energy efficient and beautiful windows can help ensure your home stays comfy and cozy all winter long.

If you’re looking for a Bellingham or Whatcom County remodeler to help improve your home’s coziness potential this winter, give Hudson Remodeling a call. We have the experience and expertise to ensure your job is done to the highest standards.

Feature Project: Barkley Hill Remodel

Posted 28 January 2016 by Team Hudson

Barkley Remodel - BeforeSometimes when people move into a home that is new-to-them they want to make subtle changes to make it their own. Such was the case with this home remodeling project in Bellingham, WA.

The owners of a 1990’s home on Barkley Hill came to us with a wish list that included:

  • Adding a new window
  • Removing an existing built-in bookcase/relocating a wall
  • Upgrading a fireplace
  • Moving a door

First, our crews framed and installed a new energy efficient window (roughly 4’ x 4’) that greatly improved territorial views of North Whatcom County and the Canadian Rockies. Interior and exterior trim, caulking and paint were added to match the home’s color scheme.

Barkley Remodel - AfterOn the same wall as the new window, an existing built-in bookcase (reported by the homeowner to be a junk collector) was removed and the wall, which originally jogged in an odd direction, was straightened so it could follow the natural lines of a vaulted ceiling. Framing, electrical and sheetrock work were included in this phase of the project.

Next up was the fireplace upgrade. First Hudson Remodeling removed the existing mantle (preserving and revamping it for later use). Then Baron Heating removed the old unit and installed a new gas fireplace unit. Then our crews finished up the job with a custom paint job and installation of a tile hearth and surround…giving the fireplace a sleek, modern look.

Tile sourced at Aqui Esta Tile & Stone in Bellingham, WA.

The last part of this home remodeling project included relocating a powder room door. The home’s original design sent guests from a powder room right into the kitchen—a design feature our customers didn’t appreciate.Relocated bathroom door

We were able to close the doorway opening next to the kitchen and create a new one just around the corner. Framing, sheetrock, texture and electrical work were included. The end result improved the flow in the living spaces around the powder room.

Here’s what our customer said about our work on this project:

“We hired Hudson Remodeling to help with a couple of projects around our home. Andrey and Dave did a great job installing a new window, moving a door and updating our fireplace. The quality of workmanship was top-notch.”
