Kitchen remodeling design trends

The kitchen. It’s the heart of your home.

It’s where meals are cooked, conversations are held, laughs are shared. It exerts a gravitational force, pulling in friends for a drink, children for help with homework, loved ones for deep conversation.

It’s no wonder we typically turn to the kitchen when we want to rejuvenate our homes. They’re a great return on investment, whether you plan to sell or live in it forever.

If you’ve been contemplating a kitchen remodel, here are a few recent trends sure to uplift the soul of your home:

Appliances: High-end appliances — Sub-Zero, Miele, Viking, Thermador, to name several — are popular these days. When you’re crafting a delicious meal for your family, you need the right tool for the job. And if you’re going to put the time and energy into a remodel, you want it done right. Homeowners these days are recognizing the utility in investing in the products they use the most. And when it comes to color, it’s worth noting: Polished stainless steel is on the way out, giving way to darker alternatives such as black and bronze.

Surface products: Countertop trends change often, cycling among laminate, granite, marble and tile. The great news is these are all enduring options. Right up there these days are two others you might not have considered lately: classic butcher block and quartz. Wood flooring has been huge in kitchens lately. Why not bring some of that up to the countertops for a fresh new look? Another option that has been trending hot lately is engineered quartz. While looking great, these countertops are also tough when it comes to handling heat and resisting stains and scratches.

Color palettes: The best kitchen colors tend to represent regions. Here in Whatcom County and throughout the Pacific Northwest, we’re inspired by the ocean, the forests, even the oft-gray skies. Keep things bright and clean by interspersing spots of color — bright ocean blues, muted sage greens, crisp cloud grays — amid swaths of white. In fact, according to HGTV, gray is the new white.

Cabinets: Two-toned and mismatched cabinets are pretty hot these days. This trend takes the classic look of white cabinetry to the next level by adding style, color and texture.

Fixtures: This is the jewelry of your kitchen. From taps to knobs to chandeliers, fixtures add a finishing flourish to your gorgeous remodel. Here’s a tip: Go bold. There are as many options in light fixtures and faucets as there are personal styles, so do some digging and find the options that work for you. Colored sink? Go for it. Oversized island lights? Why not? Make a statement by going just a little further than might be expected for the space.
