Spacious kitchen remodel in Bellingham, WA transforms home for modern living

Hudson Remodeling recently completed a home renovation that breathed new life into the main floor of a Whatcom County home. The project was centered around creating an open, spacious chef’s kitchen designed for both daily living and entertaining. By removing interior walls and outdated features, we helped the homeowners improve flow, expand storage and create space for upscale appliances.

Reworking the layout, adding structural supports

To deliver the open kitchen, dining and living room concept the homeowners wanted, the existing kitchen had to be fully demolished, opening the space down to the studs. Structural bearing walls were installed, and three large support beams were integrated into the ceiling framing per engineering specs—one of which spans the entire length of the new kitchen. This required pouring two new footings in the crawl space to support the added structural load.

From there, Hudson bumped out the pantry wall, squared off archways and widened openings to connect the lounge and living room more seamlessly.

Updated materials, modern finishes

With walls open, electrical and plumbing systems were updated to support the new kitchen layout. Lighting also got an overhaul, with recessed LED lights and dimmers added throughout the main floor, plus owner-supplied fixtures to complement the modernized aesthetic.

New sheetrock, luxury vinyl plank flooring and interior paint helped refresh and unify the entire space. Hudson’s finish carpenters carefully matched new trim and doors to existing features while updating elements like vertical casing to create a clean, modern look. Special attention was given to small details that make a big visual difference, such as wrapping exposed beams and using square stock in place of traditional trim styles.

The custom kitchen design now features hardwood cabinets, quartz countertops and a tile backsplash that adds texture and personality. Though appliance installation was handled separately, Hudson coordinated closely with the supplier to make sure everything fit perfectly.

Bathroom and other upgrades

Beyond the kitchen, a bathroom was remodeled into a powder room and linen closet. Decorative ceilings and outdated medallions were removed in favor of a cleaner, more contemporary look throughout the family room, formal dining room, living room and foyer. Drywall repairs, new doors, baseboards and crown molding finished the look with craftsmanship that blends seamlessly from one room to the next.

Exterior work included moving windows and matching siding to maintain the home’s curb appeal.

Expertise in action

During demolition, we discovered that the decorative archways separating the living room from the kitchen were acting as load-bearing elements for the second floor. Because Hudson Remodeling is experienced in navigating complex remodels, we were able to solve the issue creatively and still deliver the homeowner’s vision without delay.

Craftsmanship homeowners can trust

This project is a great example of how Hudson Remodeling helps Whatcom County homeowners reimagine their spaces to match evolving needs and tastes. Whether updating a kitchen, reworking a bathroom or transforming an entire floor, we combine design expertise with quality craftsmanship and clear communication.
