Maximizing space in a small bathroom

In many Whatcom County homes, the bathroom is one of the smallest rooms, yet it must retain a variety of essential items. Whether you’re dealing with a compact powder room or a full bath with minimal square footage, maximizing space can make it feel more open and functional. Here are some effective ways to get the most out of your bathroom space.

Opt for wall-mounted fixtures. Wall-mounted fixtures like sinks and vanities can free up valuable floor space by creating a more open look. Both options add a modern touch while giving you extra room underneath for storage baskets or other essentials. Vanities with drawers or towel racks, mirrors with built-in lighting or a combination shower/tub can save both space and money.

Go vertically with storage. When floor space is limited, think vertically. Installing shelves or cabinets above the toilet or door can create additional storage without crowding the room.

Add hooks and racks. Hooks are a simple, inexpensive way to add storage for towels, robes or accessories. You can install hooks behind the door or on the walls. A rack over the door or behind it is also a smart way to keep linens or other necessities handy without taking up cabinet space.

Add built-in storage. Recessed shelves, medicine cabinets and shower niches make use of wall space without protruding into the room. This keeps the bathroom feeling open and organized.

Consider a sliding door. Traditional swing doors can take up space and limit your layout options. If possible, switch to a sliding barn door or pocket door. This frees up floor area, allowing you to add storage or a larger vanity on the wall behind the door.
