Bang for your buck: Where to focus remodeling dollars in the Pacific Northwest

You’re probably familiar with the term “bang for your buck” when it comes to home remodeling. When you spend hard-earned remodeling dollars, you want to ensure that you’ll get as much out of the improvements as possible should you decide to sell. In the housing market, not all improvements are created equal.

If you’ve been thinking this way, great! You have efficiency in mind.

One thing you may not have considered, though, is how the region might impact the choices you make in home remodeling. Here are a few remodeling projects that tend to play particularly well here in Whatcom County:

Kitchen upgrades. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and improvements made here tend to be the most appreciated. Even if you aren’t planning to sell, kitchen updates can bring a lot of joy to daily life. This idea isn’t specific to the Pacific Northwest; kitchen improvements are well-received no matter where you are. For inspiration, browse our gallery of Whatcom County kitchen remodels

Bathroom upgrades. Like kitchens, bathrooms are a prime location for your remodeling investment. They are used often and, if remodeled well, can be sanctuaries of peace and calm. New, high-quality bathroom fixtures, tile and cabinets can turn your bathroom into a retreat you’ll be proud to call yours — and that will be attractive to potential buyers, too. Converting unused space to living area. Many homes in Whatcom County, especially older homes, have unfinished basements or attics. Upgrading portions of your house to usable space can increase the effective square footage of a home without having to mess with the footprint. Talk about efficiency! Plus, a basement renovation or attic remodel can be used as a mother-in-law suite, accessory dwelling unit or short-term rental, all of which are popular in Whatcom County.

Window additions. Because winter (and fall and spring, for that matter) in Washington can be gray and dark, people appreciate an abundance of windows to maximize natural light. One bonus is that more natural light lessens the need for artificial lighting, which reduces energy use. You might also consider skylights or solar tubes, or you may want to add or renovate a sunroom

Upgrades to boost energy efficiency. In addition to being dark, winters in Whatcom County can be long and cold. Energy-conscious upgrades can help you save money on heating bills. Plus, they are good for the environment, which people here in the Pacific Northwest appreciate. Looking for more energy efficiency ideas?
